Got A Fat "Dad" Wallet?
A customer asked me a few days ago how to slim down his wallet and I shared some tips that helped me slim down my everyday carry.
I used to carry around a fat dad wallet that had old receipts and cards I barely used.
Every since I became a moderate minimalist, I switched to a slim wallet and never looked back. I carry the cards I need the most, cut down on cash and got rid of the receipts.
It's also great that I can carry it in my front pocket. The dad wallet was destroying my pants and it is not a good look from a style standpoint.
Below you can see a comparison of my old wallet and my slim wallet.
Anyway, I thought I share my tips with everyone.
So below are 4 tips to slimming down your everyday carry.
1. If You Don't Use It, Lose it
Do you have old receipts in your wallet that been there for months or years? If you haven't used it, why keep it in your wallet? There are plenty of apps you can download on your phone that will take a picture and manage your receipts. Check out this list for more information.
2. Go Digital
Take a look at your cards and ask yourself which cards do you use at least once a week besides your ID. Do you have a store credit card? How often do you go there? If it is not often then keep it at home and take it with you when you actually go. Also, you should check to see any of your cards have an app you can use on your phone. You can store all of your loyalty and rewards cards on great apps like Stocard and Keyring or the built in Apple Wallet app. If you have cards in your wallet that can be digitized, I highly recommend it.
3. Carry Less Cash
Don't get me wrong, cash is still king but do you really need to carry a lot of cash every day. The most I carry is $100 or less. There is no need to carry that much cash in your pocket 24/7.
4. Get A Slim Wallet (Duh!)
This one is obvious. Get a minimalist wallet! If you just carry cards and no cash, then get a cardholder. If you need a minimalist wallet that has both, then I can help you.
